This article reviews information relative to the antenatal diagnosis of retarded fetal
growth in singleton and multiple gestations drawing upon standard clinical means as
well as ultrasonographic biometry and Doppler interrogation of certain vessels. The
development of fetal Doppler technology enables assessment of the recently described
vascular changes and brain-sparing effect associated with certain types of growth
retardation. Finally, a discussion follows on adverse outcome in growth retardation
and a number of fetal assessment modalities that include: Doppler, ultrasound assessed
structural malformations, transcerebellar diameter, and ponderai index and fetal blood
sampling.
